Awhile ago Adrienne explained how the Fuji film was better thank Kodak. I think she experimented with it and found out Fuji had a better quality.
It's something about the color, like Fuji captures green's and red's, whereas the Kodak film captures other colors. Don't take my word for it, I'm only trying to remember what she said about it. And I think the Fuji film caputers better, so pictures aren't as blurry. My friend and I used Kodak 800 and it was pretty bad...we got a lot of blurry shots. Next time I'll try the Fuji film. Adrienne, get in here and fix my mistakes, -BRiTTaNY |

I take a lot of pics especially at concerts. I use Kodak Max 400 film and I tend to get great results. I got some awesome photos from when I saw Savage Garden back in 2000 with that film.

Yeah, I took pictures at the Pink concert and O-Town with 800 speed Kodak, and they are pretty blurry, I mean a few of them aren't but...ok. Ya know if you have something close in the way like a hand or something, the pic turns out clear cuz it has something to focus on? If I'm not close at the next concert, I'm just gonna put my thumb in the corner so it focuses good

I don't like Kodak 800 either. I used like 4 rolls at a concert, and they were all blurry, but I used one roll of Fuji 400, and that was the best out of all 5 rolls...so yeah.

I know...the Kodak 800 sucks, I had a lot of blurry ones, and sometimes if a hand was in the picture, the hand was clear, while the background was all foggy. So that film sucks, and we spent $14 on it for 4 rolls! I'm sticking with Fuji the next time.
And my friend thought we needed the Kodak 800 for the action shots...well that's fine, IF THE FREAKIN CAMERA WOULDA WORKED FOR ANY OF THE SHOTS WE TOOK! -BRiTTaNY |

I'll give the basic answer and then dig deeper if you need more.
As far as film speed, I always shoot 400 ISO. The larger the number, the "faster" the film... and the more grainy it will be, particularly if you lack a steady hand (which I do). The rule of thumb is to always use the lowest ISO you can get away with for your shooting conditions - I bag that and always use 400, with pretty good results. Let me know if you need more. AQW |

If you see my pics from GMA that was with Fuji 800 film...I know some of them look blurry but I swear that must be my scanner cuz NONE of my actual pictures are blurry. I don't have a particular steady hand and they came out fine even with the high speed.

I have to say, I bought a camera yesterday after asking Adrienne and Debbie for advice and I'm loving it!!
Hee - the guy in the shop was very impressed with me...I went in there and asked all sorts of questions including: Quote:I mean obviously the only debate I'd ever seen was the last thread we had in DOB with Adrienne explaining about blues and greens and yellows and that completely confused me so I had no idea what I was talking about. But the guy gave me 2 free rolls of film so that I could see what I thought. Fuji Superia 400 (no idea if Superia is a European product name or whether Fuji films are the same the world over.) I was really pleased with the results that I got from my first film yesterday - the pictures were incredibly sharp. Of course, I was just taking pictures of the flowers in our back garden so that I could see whether I could actually take pics...something tells me that when things start moving I could have a problem! Doesn't Adrienne give good advice?
I also prefer Fuji film and anystore that uses Fuji Film processing. What I would do sometime if you have some extra cash or just want to practice buy different brands and different speeds and try them out like take a picture of the same thing or something. Also try out different places to get your film developed too. Like if you have a Kodak product go to CVS or somewhere that uses Kodak processing. or if you have Fuji try a place that has Fuji processing. Nicole |

The guy at my photo shop (Blacks...big chain in Canada) yesterday tried to offer me a 5-pack of their brand name 400 film, which was cheaper than the Fuji 400 - claimed it was exactly the same film. I declined.

Hmmm maybe I shouldn't be buying the RITEAID brand of film.

Many "off-brands" are major brands in disguise... for example, I am sure that Rite-Aid doesn't manufacture their own film, know what I mean? So they are re-labeling someone else's film, which may be good or bad.
Case in point - I buy Costco's house brand of film, "Kirkland". It's actually AGFA film packaged under the Kirkland name. If you look on the back of the box, you can see AGFA. So if you get offered "off-brand" film, check the box to see if you recognize one of the big-name companies... you might get yourself a deal! But when it comes right down to it... I wouldn't shoot anything but Fuji and AGFA for an important event. AQW |

Sure, I'm happy to elaborate... just mark this one Film Speed 101, by AQW.
All film is marked with an ISO number - the most common ones for commercially available print film are 100, 200, 400, and 800. The larger the ISO, the "faster" the film. Without getting too technical, the ISO indicates how quickly the film reacts to light (how "sensitive" - OTown pun intended - it is to light). The higher the number, the faster the film will form an image. Film with an ISO 400 rating reacts twice as fast to the same light as ISO 200 film, four times as fast a film with an ISO 100 rating, and eight times as fast a film with an ISO 50 rating. If you're shooting at high noon in broad daylight, an ISO of 50 or 100 will do the trick. For lower-light situations, you want a film that is more sensitive to light (reacts faster to light). So what does this mean? Most concerts can be considered low-light situations. Usually for low-light, you want two things - fast film and fast shutter-speed. If you're using a point & shoot camera and can't manually set your shutter speed, your only variable is fast film... ergo, ISO 800 is often the choice. My only beef with 800 film is the loss of resolution (the photos are grainy, particularly when enlarged beyond the standard 4x6 print size). This is why I shoot 400 speed film - it's a compromise. I'd love to shoot ISO 1600 because it allows for such low light conditions... BUT... the grain is too large. The reason I gave the standard rule of always using the lowest ISO you can get away with for your lighting conditions is that slower speed film (lower ISO) has less grain, higher resolution... TADA!... clearer photos. Does this help at all? Let me know if you need clarification, or more detailed info. AQW |
